Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo
Named after Braulio Carrillo Colina, who served terms as Costa Rica's third, and also sixth president.
Beginning at the Zurqui Tunnel, the park, established in 1978 was formed after the development of route 32, the major artery linking the Capital city of San José to the coastal seaport of Limón. In creating this park, Costa Rica was able to assure maintenance of the road that completely bisects the park, while at the same time, preserving a natural habitat for countless rare and exotic flora and fauna unique only to this particular geographical location.
As you make your nearly 10,000 foot decent from San José towards Guápiles, in the Caribbean, you can observe a rich variety of the 600+ species of trees, 530+ species of birds, and 135+ species of mammals that freely habit the region. Delight your senses and be prepared to the amazing size, brilliance and beauty of the giant Blue Morpho Butterflies.
